VDOT Extends ParkZen App Pilot Program for Commuter Lots in Northern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is extending the pilot program for the ParkZen app through May 2025 to improve parking management at commuter lots in Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg. Initially launched in November 2024, ParkZen uses crowdsourcing technology to provide real-time updates on parking availability by analyzing mobile phone data rather than traditional sensors.

Key Features of ParkZen

Users can download the app and enable location services to receive timely information about parking spots. Joel Ticatch, VP of Consulting at Kapsch TrafficCom, noted, “It helps travelers determine ahead of time whether parking is available at selected commuter lots,” aiming to reduce pre-pandemic parking issues and promote transit use.

Participation is voluntary, but user involvement enhances the app’s effectiveness. Ticatch assured users that their privacy is protected, as ParkZen does not sell user data. This initiative is part of VDOT’s Regional Multimodal Mobility Program (RM3P), which may introduce incentives for users who adjust their travel habits.

Pilot Locations

The pilot operates in six key commuter lots, including:

• Prince William County: Horner Road commuter lot
• Stafford County: Brooke and Leeland Road VRE station lots
• Fairfax County: Saratoga and Stringfellow Road lots
• Fairfax County: Backlick Road VRE station lot
